Mapping the London Underground

Translating a vast and historically rich subject into a clear, engaging typographic system.

This was a response to the 2023 Mapping brief set by the International Society of Typographic Designers, which was awarded membership. Mapping the London Underground explores the London Underground map, its history, its design evolution, and wider impacts on London and the world. The map itself is not only significant in terms of clear and impactful information design systems, but also in a cultural history context.

The challenge was to translate a vast and historically rich subject into a clear, engaging typographic system. This document needed to not only communicate how the complexity and effectiveness of the map influenced wayfinding, but also how the map became a cultural symbol in London, affecting daily life in astounding ways. This required distilling dense research into structured, legible content while reflecting the systematic visual language of structure and clarity that define the map itself.

My roles:

  • Research

  • Content writing

  • Concept development

  • Visual execution

Opportunity

The two publications balance historic narrative and visual analysis. On The Surface, is an overview structure moving from past to present focusing on the influence and importance of the map, and how it provides a clear way to communicate complex information. The second, Going Deeper, dives into technical aspects of the Maps information design, visual language and typographic genius.

The design principles of the original map inform the visual narrative and incorporate structured grids, meticulous typesetting, 45 and 90-degree angles, as well as circle and line graphics. Print mediums are a nod to the original maps used in pre-digital wayfinding times, but also enriches the user's experience of opening up the additional fold outs which mimic the maps iconic form.

Outcome

This pair of documents enables readers to engage with complex information through a carefully constructed visual and typographic system. The project was awarded Membership into the International Society of Typographic Designers, recognising its conceptual strength and execution.

In a broader sense, the work is a unique educational resource which highlights the nuances of the Underground Map, and how good design can change behaviour and have an influence on daily life. It also highlights the map as a cultural symbol, and provides context for in the impact it has had on modern urban life.
